Hello!
My name is Mara, and I’m the founder of eTutor Nest. With over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience, I bring both expertise and passion to education. As a chemist, teacher, business owner, and lifelong learner, I’ve worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry, taught high school Science—including Chemistry, Earth Science, and Biology—and supported students across diverse subjects and levels in many different settings. I’m also a certified TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) tutor, dedicated to making learning engaging and accessible.
My Story
I grew up in Puerto Rico, where both of my parents were teachers—and because of them, I absolutely loved school. Even as a teenager, I knew I wanted to eventually move to the United States, so while I was finishing high school, I began taking advanced English and conversational courses. I was also very close to two of my cousins, whose mother was an English teacher. They grew up speaking English without an accent, and I admired that. As a Hispanic woman, I was aware of the stigma that can sometimes come with having an accent, so I wanted to give myself one less thing to worry about if I ever made the move.

My first tutoring experience came in college, when my General Chemistry professor encouraged me to become a tutor. I ended up tutoring General and Organic Chemistry for about three years and truly enjoyed it. By the time I had my own children, I had already told my husband that I wanted to be their teacher. This decision was influenced both by personal circumstances and by the changes I saw happening in the school system back home. Although he was skeptical at first, he supported me wholeheartedly—especially during the early years. Since we were a multicultural family (he’s Croatian and I’m Puerto Rican), English naturally became our family language.
Homeschooling came with plenty of challenges, but the rewards were immeasurable. I’m proud to have been deeply involved in my children’s education—from teaching them how to read to helping them understand high school Chemistry. That experience sparked a stronger desire to teach others, and I began tutoring students in different capacities, primarily as an in-person English and Math tutor.

In 2012, our dream of moving to the United States became a reality, and I continued my career in Chemistry. Two years later, I decided to try traditional classroom teaching and took a position in a brick-and-mortar school. I loved my students and the experience, but I continued to struggle with the school system. So, after two years, I returned to Chemistry—my comfort zone and my main career to this day. Still, teaching has always been in my heart, so I continued tutoring privately at different levels throughout the years.

Earlier this year, I finally took the leap and pursued my Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certification, with the goal of eventually teaching internationally. Part of the certification required completing a practicum at a location of my choice. I chose to volunteer as a virtual English tutor at a center that helps immigrant adults navigate the challenges of settling in a new country—especially learning the language. I was inspired by their mission and knew I wanted to contribute in some way.

This experience, combined with the many specialty courses I completed after my certification, sparked an even bigger passion in me. It got me here. It motivated me to get to start an affordable, fully virtual English tutoring business. I’m committed to helping others while doing something that I love. I am committed to continuing my learning—exploring new softwares, methods, and techniques—to make my lessons as interactive and effective as possible, tailored to each student’s level and needs.
